Three hours after finding two people dead in their Holladay home, Unified police said they had arrested a person of interest — the couple’s son.

About 5:30 p.m., police found Robert and Diane Liddiard, whom police described as both in their mid-80s, at a home near 4700 S. Wander Lane after being called there for a welfare check, Lt. Brian Lohrke said.

Online records show Robert Liddiard is 85 and his wife is 78.

Police are considering the deaths homicides, although details about how the two died were not immediately available.

About 8:30 p.m., police arrested the couple’s son, Robert Liddiard, 51, at a home in Millcreek. Police are unsure of his motive, although Lohrke later said that “he suffers from mental health issues, which we believe attributed to his behavior today.”

Earlier Saturday evening, the Liddiards’ son had allegedly told family members some things that made them worry for the couple, which prompted them to call police.

When police arrived at the home, they found the couple dead, Lohrke said.

The family of those involved declined, through Lohrke, to make a statement to the media, although they said the younger Robert Liddiard “has been battling serious mental health issues for quite some time.”
