The Unified Police Department on Wednesday recovered a man’s body from a creek near 145 W. Central Avenue in Millcreek.
The body was spotted in Big Cottonwood Creek about 10:30 p.m. by several people working on a nearby TRAX line, UPD Lt. Brian Lohrke said. The body was transported to the medical examiner’s office as police worked to identify him.
However, officials and family members indicated it was likely Nick Kapos, an 82-year-old Murray man with demential missing since Thursday. Lohrke said UPD asked Murray police to come to the scene due to that likelihood. A UPD search and rescue team assisted with the water recovery, which can be a delicate process to retain evidence, he said.
Kapos’ family searched for him through the weekend and into this week, putting up fliers and canvassing Murray-area businesses. Dozens of family, friends and other volunteers helped with the search Saturday.
“We are being realistic,” Trish Kapos, a spokeswoman for the family, said earlier this week. “He hasn‘t had his medications since he went missing, and he’s probably dehydrated. Dad has passed out before from being dehydrated.”
Trish Kapos said Murray police have processed several possibly sightings, but they have all turned out to be “cold leads.”
The most promising, she said, was a Taylorsville resident who reported Sunday seeing a man matching Nick Kapos description picking plums from a fruit tree. However, by the time he saw a photo of Kapos and called police, the man was long gone.
