BYU started off slowly and on third and three, Mangum threw another interception that was batted at the line of scrimmage and gathered up by Utah defensive tackle Filipo Mokofisi.

A Mangum sack stopped the Cougars’ drive before it started. BYU stalled on a quick three-and-out and was forced to punt.

9:36 in second quarter, Utah extends lead to 6-0

The Utes started their drive on the 20 and Tyler Huntley found Siaosi Wilson for a huge gain immediately, down to BYU’s 32. Utah’s offense moved quickly behind some Huntley heroics and he found Darren Carrington II for a two-yard score before the play was called back for offensive pass interference. The Utes never recovered and settled for another field goal, hitting the 25-yard FG.

2:07 first quarter to 9:36 in second quarter

BYU gained nine with a strike from Mangum to Shumway to start a drive at the 30 yard line. Carrying into the second quarter, the Cougars found rhythm in the passing game to advance past midfield. Utah linebacker Sunia Tauteoli was called for targeting and ejected from the game for a hit on Mangum, advancing the Cougars further. Mangum appeared to find Talon Shumway for a passing TD, but the BYU was called for offensive pass interference. The Cougars settled for a 28-yard field goal attempt, but Rhett Almond missed the kick.

3:45 first quarter

Utah attempted a trick play pass by wide receiver Darren Carrington II, but was quickly backed up by a holding call. The Utes couldn’t recover, coming up a yard short on third down, and were forced to punt again.

6:22 first quarter

Tanner Mangum found Talon Shumway with a tipped pass to start off the drive with a 20-yard gain. Two runs later, the Cougars advanced past the 50-yard line for the first time since the season opener. Mangum was hit on a safety blitz by Utah’s Chase Hansen that was originally ruled a fumble, but was reversed as an incomplete pass. The Cougars stalled again and were forced to punt.

12:54 first quarter

BYU’s offense is still looking to find a rhythm after last week’s debacle against LSU. The Cougars gained eight yards on their first offensive drive in an early defensive struggle.

15:00 first quarter

BYU won the opening toss, but deferred to Utah, who took the first possession. The Utes used a read option to quickly get to the middle of the field behind Tyler Huntley, but went backward on a holding call and botched snap. The Utes stalled out and BYU took over at their own nine.
